Quick summary: every login, certificate download and update on the Udyam portal sends an OTP to the mobile number or email you entered when you applied. If one of them is out of date, you can log in with the other and change it. If you’ve lost access to both, the change has to go through your District Industries Centre (DIC).
It usually comes to light at a bad moment. A bank asks for a fresh copy of your certificate, you open the portal, and the OTP goes to a SIM you stopped using two years ago. Nothing is wrong with your enterprise’s record. The contact details on it are just stale, and fixing them takes about ten minutes if you still have one way in.
Your Udyam record and your Aadhaar can hold different mobile numbers
Most of the confusion starts here. Two mobile numbers are involved, and they do different jobs.
| Aadhaar-linked mobile | Mobile on your Udyam record | |
|---|---|---|
| Stored with | UIDAI (the Aadhaar database) | Your Udyam application |
| Used for | The Aadhaar OTP when you first apply | Login, certificate downloads, updates, and recovering a forgotten Udyam Number |
| Where to change it | An Aadhaar enrolment or update centre | The Udyam portal, after logging in |
When you applied, the Aadhaar OTP went to the number linked with your Aadhaar. The mobile and email you typed into the application form are stored separately, and those are the ones the portal uses from then on. They can be the same number, but they don’t have to be. So updating your Aadhaar mobile won’t fix a Udyam login problem, and changing the Udyam mobile does nothing to your Aadhaar.
First, work out which situation you’re in
- You still have the old mobile. Log in with it and change the email, the mobile, or both. The steps are below.
- The old mobile is gone, but the registered email still works. Log in with an OTP on email instead, then replace the mobile number.
- You’ve lost access to both. The portal can’t verify you online, so the change goes through your DIC. Skip to that section.
Not sure which email you used? Try every address you had around the time you applied, and check the spam folder when the OTP is sent.
How to change the mobile number or email on the portal
You’ll need your 19-character Udyam Number (UDYAM-XX-00-0000000), the mobile number from your original application, and access to either that mobile or the registered email. The portal asks for the old mobile number even when you choose the email OTP, so find it before you start. It’s printed in the address section of your certificate. If you’ve lost the Udyam Number itself, recover your Udyam Number first.
- Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose the update option from the portal’s Update Details menu.
- Enter your Udyam Number and the mobile number exactly as it was filled in your application.
- Choose where the OTP should go: OTP on Mobile or OTP on Email. Pick whichever one you can still reach.
- Fill in the verification code, generate the OTP, and log in once it’s validated.
- In the contact details, replace the old mobile number or email with the new one. Check both fields while you’re there. An outdated email causes the same problem later.
- Review the form and submit the update.
Then log out and log back in using the new details. If the OTP arrives on the new number or inbox, the change has gone through.
If you’ve lost access to both the mobile and the email
An online update isn’t possible without an OTP on one of the two. For this case, the official Udyam FAQ directs you to your jurisdictional District Industries Centre (DIC), where you submit a physical application with supporting documents. It also lists the MSME Samadhaan portal as another place to raise the request.
For a DIC visit, carry:
- A copy of your Udyam certificate, or at least your Udyam Number
- Aadhaar and PAN of the proprietor, partner, or authorised signatory
- A short signed letter asking for the mobile number or email to be updated, with the old and new details
Requirements differ from one district to the next, so call the DIC before you go and ask what they need.
Do you also need to change your Aadhaar mobile?
Only if you’ll need an Aadhaar OTP again, for example to file a fresh application or for other services that verify you through Aadhaar. Updating it has no effect on your Udyam login.
The mobile number linked to Aadhaar can’t be changed online. You’ll need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre, where your biometrics are checked. UIDAI then processes the request, which can take a few days.
After the update: download a fresh certificate
Your Udyam Number doesn’t change, and nothing else on your record is touched. The certificate does print the enterprise’s mobile and email in its address section, though, so any copy you downloaded earlier still shows the old details. Download a fresh copy and use that one with banks, buyers and tender portals.
If other details are out of date too, such as the address, bank account or activity codes, our guide to correcting business details covers those.
Common problems
The OTP never arrives
Wait for the resend timer before trying again. Requesting several OTPs in quick succession tends to make things worse. Check that the phone has signal and can receive SMS, and if the mobile OTP still doesn’t come, switch to the email option.
The portal says the mobile number doesn’t match
The number you entered isn’t the one stored on your record. Check the mobile printed on an old copy of your certificate, or try other numbers you were using at the time you applied.
The session times out halfway through
The portal logs you out after a period of inactivity. Keep the new mobile number and email ready before you log in, and try outside business hours if the site is slow.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the mobile number on my Udyam record without an OTP? Not online. The portal needs an OTP on either the registered mobile or the registered email. If you can’t reach either, apply through your District Industries Centre (DIC).
Is there a government fee to update the mobile number or email? No. Updating contact details on the Udyam portal is free. A consultant may charge for doing it on your behalf, but the government doesn’t.
Can the mobile number on my Udyam record be different from my Aadhaar mobile? Yes. They are stored separately. The Aadhaar-linked mobile is used for the Aadhaar OTP when you apply, and the mobile in your application is used for everything on the Udyam portal after that.
Will my Udyam Number change after I update the mobile number? No. Your Udyam Number stays the same. Download a fresh certificate afterwards, though, because the mobile and email are printed on it.
Can someone else make the change for me? Yes. A consultant can handle the update, but the OTP still goes to your registered mobile or email, so you’ll need to share it at the time of the update.
Short on time, or stuck at the OTP step? Our Edit Udyam certificate service updates the contact details on your record for you. You only need to share the OTP when it arrives.
