How to recover a forgotten Udyam Registration Number

Forgetting the number does not affect the registration. It is still active on the portal and can be looked up again. The form above does the recovery for you, and this is how it works.

Choose the type of registration. The portal asks whether you hold a Udyam Registration or an older Udyog Aadhaar (UAM).
Pick mobile or email. Recovery works with the mobile number or the email address that was entered in the original application.
Verify with OTP. A one-time password is sent to that mobile or email. Once it is entered, the portal shows the Udyam Number linked to it.

Many people search for the certificate when what they have actually lost is the number. The two go together. The certificate PDF can only be downloaded with the Udyam Number and an OTP, so the number has to be recovered first.

Once you have it, a fresh copy of the certificate can be pulled as many times as you need. Use the Udyam certificate download page for that step. Nothing is cancelled or reissued when you download it again.

Recover a Udyam Number by mobile number, Aadhaar or PAN

By mobile number. This is the standard route. It works when you still have the mobile number used in the application.
By email. If the mobile number has changed, the email address given in the application can receive the OTP instead.
With Aadhaar details. The registration was created with the owner’s Aadhaar. Knowing whose Aadhaar was used tells you which mobile number and email to try.

Udyam Registration Number: what it looks like and where to find it

The Udyam Registration Number, also called the URN, has 19 characters in this pattern: UDYAM-XX-00-0000000. The two letters are the state code, the next two digits are the district code and the last seven digits are the serial number.

Before starting a recovery, check the places where the number usually sits:

The email and SMS sent on the day of registration. Search your inbox for the word UDYAM.
The certificate PDF, if a copy was ever saved or shared with your bank or accountant.
Loan papers, tender documents and GeM seller profiles, where the number is normally quoted.
Your CA or the person who filed the registration for you.

Forgot Udyog Aadhaar instead of Udyam?

Udyog Aadhaar was the earlier system and its numbers start with a state code such as MH or DL instead of UDYAM. Those registrations are no longer valid. Prevent This from Happening Again

A forgotten URN doesn’t cancel your registration. But recovery always seems to come up at the worst possible time: the day before a loan deadline, in the middle of a tender submission. A few habits make sure it doesn’t happen twice:

Save the certificate PDF to two separate cloud locations. Google Drive plus your business email archive is the simplest pairing. Don’t rely on a single device. Phones get lost, laptops crash.

Print two physical copies and store them in different places. One at the office, one with your accountant or company secretary. Government tender submissions still ask for physical copies more often than you’d expect.

Record the URN in three places. Your business records register, your accounting software (Tally, Zoho Books, whatever you use), and an email to yourself with “Udyam URN — [Business Name]” in the subject line. The email is searchable later when you can’t find anything else.

Keep your Aadhaar-linked mobile active. If you switch SIMs or operators, update the linked number at UIDAI before the old one goes dead. OTP recovery only works through the currently-linked number.

Share the recovery path with someone you trust. Your accountant, company secretary, or a senior team member. Not just the URN itself, but the full picture: which Aadhaar number, which mobile, where the certificate PDF is stored. If the registered owner can’t be reached for any reason, business continuity comes down to whether one other person knows how to retrieve the documents.

Setting these up takes ten minutes once. Most lost-URN scenarios disappear after that.
