What MSME registration means today, who can apply, what you need and how the online process works.
MSME registration is how a business in India gets recognised as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise. Since 1 July 2020 it is done in one way only: through Udyam Registration on the Ministry of MSME’s portal. The older routes, EM-II and Udyog Aadhaar, are closed. If you are looking to register an MSME, you are looking for Udyam Registration.
Please note: this website is run by Provelty Enterprises, a private consultancy. We are not affiliated with the Government of India. The official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in and it charges no fee. Our charges are for filing assistance only.
Any business that makes goods or provides services can apply, whatever its size at the start. That includes:
A business is registered once against its PAN. One enterprise cannot hold two Udyam Registrations, but it can list any number of activities and units under the same one. See which business activities are not eligible before you apply.
You do not choose the category. The portal works it out from investment in plant and machinery or equipment and from annual turnover. These are the limits in force from 1 April 2025:
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
An enterprise has to be within both limits of a category. Export turnover is left out when turnover is counted. The classification section on our homepage has the details.
The process is paperless. Nothing is uploaded, but these details have to be correct:
You can do all of this yourself on the government portal at no cost. If you would rather have it checked and filed for you, fill in the short form on our homepage and our team takes it from there. Most certificates are ready in 1 to 2 working days.
The Udyam certificate is your MSME certificate. It carries a permanent registration number and a QR code, and it does not expire. What you may need later:
Registration itself does not hand out money. It makes the business eligible for things that are otherwise closed to it: collateral-free loans under credit guarantee cover, priority sector lending, protection against delayed payments under the MSMED Act, relaxations in government tenders and a number of central and state subsidies. Our guide to the benefits of MSME registration goes through each one.
