Udyam registration does not expire and does not need to be renewed. Once you register, the Udyam Registration Number stays valid for as long as your business exists, unless you cancel it yourself. There is no renewal fee and no renewal form on the government portal.
What the rules do require is that you keep your registration up to date. This guide explains what that means in practice, and when a registration can stop being valid.
Why there is no renewal
The Udyam rules (Ministry of MSME notification S.O. 2119(E) of 26 June 2020) set up a one-time, permanent registration. Instead of renewing, the system refreshes your classification every year using your Income Tax return and GST data, which it reads through your PAN. That is why your Udyam certificate shows a table of classification years, each with a category and a date of classification.
So if someone asks you to pay for an "annual Udyam renewal", treat it as a red flag. No such government requirement exists.
What you must keep updated
The same notification asks every registered enterprise to update its information online on the Udyam portal, including the details of its ITR and GST return for the previous financial year. Failure to update within the specified period can make the enterprise liable to have its status suspended. In practice, this means:
- File your ITR (and GST returns, if registered) on time. This is what lets the portal update your classification automatically.
- Update changed details: address, plant locations, bank account, mobile number, email, number of employees and business activities.
- Add new activities under the same registration instead of registering again. See add a second business activity.

When a registration stops being valid
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Business details not updated within the specified period | The enterprise can be liable to suspension of its status |
| You cancel the registration on the portal | The registration ends; a new one is needed if you restart |
| Business grows beyond the medium limits (₹125 crore investment or ₹500 crore turnover) | It is no longer an MSME |
| Registration obtained with false information | It can be cancelled, and penalties under section 27 of the MSMED Act can apply |
| You hold only an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) number | Not valid; you must register on Udyam |
Udyog Aadhaar holders: register again
Udyog Aadhaar memorandums filed before 1 July 2020 ceased to be valid in 2022. If your business only ever had a UAM number, it is not currently registered as an MSME. Register on Udyam using the steps in our Udyog Aadhaar to Udyam migration guide.
What happens when your category changes
Because classification is refreshed every year, a micro unit can become small, or a small unit medium, without any new registration. If you move up, you keep the non-tax benefits of your old category for three years from the change (notification S.O. 4926(E), 18 October 2022). Our article on moving from small to medium explains the details. To see where your figures place you, try the MSME classification checker.
